CREATE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE-Image

Embrace digital transformation and be inspired to create your own adventure in the quest to reach your digital vision.

Digitising operations within an organisation is not a new phenomenon, businesses have been doing it since the 90s. However true digital transformation requires more than just doing what you've always done and adding an app. It must be a companywide vision that allows technology to take your business on a journey and to inspire a business strategy rather than just simply enabling it.

True digital transformation starts with crafting a digital vision that encompasses all aspects of the organisation. It can take a wide range of perspectives and the approach taken to craft this vision will vary depending on the nature of the organisation, as well as the organisation's needs and capabilities. Regardless of all these variables, one thing rings true for every digital vision: it must start at the top. Business leaders must plant the seed and drive the initiative by engaging employees and clearly communicating the vision, while also maintaining a dynamic approach to allow the adventure to be adaptable in line with any changing expectations and requirements.

The following steps will help define your business's digital vision.

1. Be brave and ambitious when crafting your vision and set a clear intention and outcome for your vision.

"The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious." John Sculley, Former Apple CEO

Digital visions can focus on a number of processes, but generally will either be directed at re-envisioning and enhancing customer experience, or transforming operational processes and internal collaboration. Setting a clear outcome for your vision, and knowing the fundamental why behind it will help determine the extent of the value that it will create for your business and drive the adventure forward.

2. Engage your entire organisation to transform your vision into a reality.

“Highly engaged employees make the customer experience. Disengaged employees break it” Timothy R. Clark, The 5 Ways That Highly Engaged Employees are Different

No matter how advanced an organisation's digital initiatives are, they will only transform an organisation if the business leaders can communicate the vision and have the capability and management to drive the transformation from the ground up. Encourage companywide collaboration to break down the silo mentality and remain both open minded and receptive to new technologies and ideas in the development of this contemporary vision.

3. Allow your vision to evolve and adapt over time.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change” Charles Darwin

The most epic of adventures generally don't take the most direct route to their destination. Even with a firm destination in mind, your adventure will likely take you off the beaten track or possibly change direction completely. This might be as a result of new technological advances or maybe unforeseen challenges. The vision needs to have a very clear intention and purpose, but it is just as important not to be blinkered by this vision and have the capacity to pivot in a different direction as the adventure unfolds.

It is an exciting time to be involved in this rapidly evolving digital world, but it can also be daunting when tasked with crafting an all-encompassing digital vision for your business. Bringing in leading digital experts and IT consultants to help you brainstorm and focus this vision will be time and money well spent.
